The backpacker. Not much can pin them down or define them, as they come and go as they please, taking everything in their stride and breaking the conventional norms of travel. They’re fiercely independent, obsessed with local culture, happy to wash dishes to get by, and doing everything they can to have the experience of a lifetime without the heavy price tag.

The backpacker operates by his or her own set of rules. They’ll often sleep on station benches to bag a cheaper ticket or avoid hotel fees. They’ll hitchhike when they can, enjoying good conversation from a stranger. The backpacker hates nothing more than being ripped off.  But above all, the backpacker (like his name suggests) absolutely loves his backpack. They share a sacred bond. The backpack carries the weight of the world. It nourishes and clothes the weary traveler. It warms the chilly traveler and provides much-needed headrest when called upon. 

But despite their glorifying status, modern backpackers are in decline. The world is turning into a place of luxury and convenience, and true penny-pinching backpackers are few and far between! And more and more travelers are trading in their backpacks for suitcases and electronic gadgets. True backpackers don’t carry Macs or hairdryers, and they certainly don’t book private rooms. 

Mention the gesture to flashpacker. Are you one of the rare few left to stick the middle finger to the system, dive into the unknown and do things your way? 

However The Real Backpacker is an extinct race, and replaced with the modern Flashpackers those days who prent to be a Backpacker.
